I don’t know why, but suddenly these days I am having a penchant for talking about and researching fashion. I guess a presentation my student gave me about Korean fashion made me suddenly interested in it.
Now as I was browsing through an old magazine (I say old even though it was just a magazine last year), I saw a collection that really caught my eye, because of it’s chic attempt at a very traditional kind of clothing. And I am talking about the dresses of Naoko Tsuruta‘s Kimono Chic fashion.
That’s here beside the model. Look at that design. And look at her dress, a modern take on the kimono! Love!
In her website, it says that she started out as a jewelry designer and eventually made on to designing dresses. I absolutely love the fact that she the traditional kimono — which by the way in reality is a very difficult ensemble to wear — and transformed it into something chic and modern that any girl can wear. I am a big fan of flowy dresses (though I’m not sure if it looks good on me), and her design has really really gotten my applause!
Check out her other clothes:
I could wear her clothes! She doesn’t have a new collection out yet (or so I think). But I am definitely wanting more of her style and will be watching out for more of her designs.

There is no doubt that Korea is a fashionista country. And it is very evident in how the way people there dreess up, even when they are meeting their friends. A friend once told me that you cannot just dress down in Korea or will look like a loser on the street.
Now thanks to the Hallyu wave, Korea’s fashion has spread all over the world. Even from where I live, some teens dress like how Kpop artists dress up on Music shows (though sometimes it’s ridiculous, because it’s very hot in my country!!!). However, not all the things that artists wear on the shows are wearable to me. I think it’s good for their perfomances, but going around the mall.. uh uh! No way!
Now to the main topic.. Secret has made promotions for 2 songs this year, one is for Shy Boy and the other is for Starlight, Moonlight. And what I noticed from their concept, is that they used clothes that are very wearable. It’s casual but very chic. And definitely not over the top.
Apparently, these clothes have been a trend in Korea, where girls show their feminine sides with soft tones and goddess like styled dresses.
And thanks to secret the 50’s 60’s style clothes are gaining interests again among the young generation. It scream vintage. And did I tell you how much I love the shoes!! Mary Janes!!! If there was a time I’d like to go back to that would be the 50’s and the 60’s.. I just love their style back then.
This is what I admire about the group and their stylists!
I still love the other girl groups but sometimes I can’t wear what they’re wearing!
As an activity, I asked one of my business students to make a presentation about Korean fashion (as it was her major). She readily obliged that request and made me see a little bit of Korean street fashion.
What made me interested was a the bag I saw… apparently its the new trend in Korea, the Envelope Clutch Bag.
My student left Korea two months ago but she has not seen this bag. It was only one month before that this bag has become a hit and the trend has spread among the young people, making it a must have for Korean street wear. (She said it was because one drama used it as an accessory, she couldn’t tell me what the drama was though).
I saw the exact same bag when I went on a trip to Singapore 2 weeks ago. I wanted to buy one because at that time I thought it would be a good place to put some of my documents and it looked fashionable. Little did I know that this was the current trend in Korea! Sigh I should have trusted my instinct.. I should have bought one!
To others it may look like a typical envelope, but it comes in different colors and materials that goes well with your clothes. It’s amazing how they come up with something that’s so fashionable! Even men can use these bags and they still look good!!! I’m not an expert in fashion but this is one bag I want to have especially now because not everyone has it…
