Woohyun (Infinite) and Lucia – Cactus (MV)

I don’t know what is it with me and feeling sentimental these days, but I am on a roll of ballad and sad songs.

But I am glad I found this song. I love it! It’s the new duet featuring Woohyun (Infinite) and Lucia 심규선. It’s called Cactus 선인장.

The Video

OMG! I love videos like this. I love it that Korean videos are now exploring this kind of story telling in their videos. Such a unique video for a nice song. I love how artistic it is. Whoever thought of this is pure genius!

The video shows two frames. And if you look at it closely and slowly follow the story of each frame, you would see that the top one tells the story from the girl’s point of view and the bottom frame tells the story of the guy. Both stories start at different times, the girl from the present (or could be the future) and the guy from the past. Both of the meet at a specific moment, when the guy was trying to break up with the girl. From the girls view, you will see that she is tracing back her steps, while the guy is moving forward. My take on the story is that the guy is sick and he was breaking up with the girl to keep her from feeling the pain. On the other hand, the girl can’t take the break up but later on realizes that the guy was really trying to protect her from being hurt too much. In the end the guy died, and the cactus is there to remind the girl of the love the man had for her.

I love how beautifully the story was made into the video. Especially with the frames telling different stories past and future, but were related to each other. This is effective story telling. I still can’t get over how nice the video was and how well the director played with the symbolism in the video. And let’s not forget the reference of the cactus in the video.

I’ve read that some would have liked to see both singers in the video, but I think this video is just the right thing the song needs. If they were present, they would have ruined the concept and story of the video… I think sometimes, you don’t need to see the singer of the song to appreciate a good song or video.

The Song

I love Infinite, so I was really looking forward to this collaboration. But when I learned that the title of the song was Cactus. I had to do a double take. But after listening to it, I couldn’t believe the symbolism of the song. The lyricist’s way of telling us the story of a cactus — and giving it life is very beautiful. Who would’ve have thought of relating that feeling to the cactus! (Also, we have to thank Loenent for making the translation!)

The melody of the song though, is a bit simple. Something that we might have heard before. But, the feeling of sadness is still there. Also, though I love Woohyun’s voice, I would have loved listening to more of Lucia in the song instead of just the last part. I think the part where they did they’re blending, Woohyun’s voice was too loud that I could barely hear Lucia’s voice. Their blending would have been nice if both had the right volume.

Final Verdict: I’d never thought I’d listening to a song called Cactus. But don’t let the title of the song fool you, because the lyrics are very meaningful. This is one of the best videos I’ve seen (so far) for this year. I love that Korean MVs are trying out new concepts and not just the same old things they done in the past.

One Shot – B.A.P (MV)

I’ve already made a post before about my feeling towards the increasing number of idol groups. I still feel the same, but I am always open to listening to their songs. I do like some of the new songs for new idol groups.. but I still don’t recognize most of them because of the increasing number.

For the year that I have been teaching here in Thailand, one group is really very popular. It’s B.A.P. I do know this group but I wasn’t really a fan of their music, though Power was a good one, but it still wasn’t doing it for me. Then there was Stop It. It sounded nice, but it was still a bubble gum pop song. When I knew they released a new song, I decided to give it one more go. And I think I quite like this song. It’s their recent single One Shot.

The Video

Boy was this one brutal video!!! And for an idol group to release this kind of video… but on the other hand, I think the video made a very good effort to tell the story. And I love the twist in the ending. I’m totally a sucker for twists in plots!! I was kind of surprised when I saw the video because of the excessive use of guns and blood! haha.. but at least it’s not the same old bubble gum pop aegyo video. Hay don’t get me wrong, it’s nice to see aegyo sometimes, just not in every idol group video!

But what I don’t get in this video is the yacht scene. Umm anyone care to explain? Sorry B.A.P fans, but I’d rather skip to the 26th second of the video. I know they are idols, but in that scene they looked too young. And the sexy girls at the back didn’t help much either. And why do I have to see that guy eating grapes that way?? Oh well I am not a B.A.P fan yet, so I guess that scene was for fan service… but what’s with the girls?

The Song

I know B.A.P is known for their power tracks. But their past singles were just too powerful and strong for me. That I couldn’t appreciate it that much. But for this song, I think it’s strong but at the same time, I could feel the vocals as well as hear the powerful rap. Although the group is known and acknowledged for their rappers abilities, they shouldn’t forget that there are some members who could belt a powerful tune.

I also liked that this song reminded me of some western hip hop tracks in the 90s and early 2000’s — think the likes of Lose Yourself (Eminem) and Gangster’s Paradise (Coolio). I guess I have to say B.A.P pulled it off. Now I kind of understand why my students go gaga over their songs — because it’s strong and it’s not the usual bubble gum pop song. I’m seeing B.A.P in a new light.

Final Verdict: I’m glad I gave B.A.P another try. I like this because it’s not only a rap track, but it’s also pays homage to the members who do the vocals. I hope their upcoming songs would be like this.. they maybe I’ll like them more!

Who’s ready for 2AM’s Comeback?? + Happy 5th Anniversary!

Yay! I can’t contain my excitement!

2AM is finally making a comeback next month!!!!

I have been waiting for this come back since their I Wonder If You Hurt Like Me. Although the boys were still active through individual promotions, variety shows and dramas, nothing beats them making music together.

2AM is actually one of those groups I really like. Yes they are a boyband, they can dance (well maybe not as good as other boy idol groups) but boy can they sing! I love the fact that they are an idol group but at the same time the songs they release are mostly ballads. It’s a ballad but it would still have high ranks on the chart.

The new album is called One Spring Day. From the look of the teaser, it could be a sad song. A set filled with pianos outgrown by roots and trees that are in full bloom — hmm it could mean recalling a love lost in the past? Ok so I’m just guessing. But I really can’t wait for this new album!

I’ve never been disappointed with their songs so my expectations are a bit high. I hope this would not be the first one! Can’t wait for March 5!

Oh and as a bonus… 2AM has been in the industry for 5 years already. This video is a video of that 5 year journey.

Oh how they’ve grown and matured since 2008. I hope they won’t stop bringing beautiful ballads. Congratulations!!!! Please don’t break up. Sorry for that statement but since DBSK broke up on their 5th year, I am almost always scared the idol groups I like will break up.. Please don’t!

Flower Boy Next Door’s Last Week

I can’t believe it!!! This is week is the last week of Flower Boy Next Door (이웃집 꽃미남).

I wouldn’t get to see Ke-Geum or Go Kyung Pyo who exactly looks and sounds like Choi Siwon!

I know I haven’t posted much on the blog but I religiously watch out for this drama… well maybe i don’t have time to watch all 40 minutes of it, but I do watch out for the recaps! Yes, I am still busy but i succumb to one indulgence, which is this drama.

I love this drama! It’s the last installment of TVN’s Flower Boy Series. Oh TVN, you’re a cable channel but your dramas are so wonderful! The drama PD’s they have are absolute geniuses! Most of their dramas are hits on my book, especially the Flower Boy series. There is not one that I did not like. I like this because it’s something that is very easy to watch, yet it’s something that is close to reality. I like that they do not follow the usual rich chaebol falls in love with a poor girl story line (though there is a chaebol in the story but it’s not following the same pattern). I like that they aren’t afraid to deal with an issues that are real and that really happen and I like that they throw a story line to incorporate a lesson which most teens can relate to.

Park Shin Hye and Yoon Shi Yoon could’ve fooled me to thinking they were really together! haha that’s how their chemistry works! I think, this is the best pairing Yoon Shi Yoon has had over the years. I really liked him in Kim Tak Goo.. In Me Too, Flower, he was funny but looked so young for the character. But this one, I could swear he is the perfect person to play Ke-guem!!!  I also love Park Shin Hye here. I think is the the best drama that I have seen her in. I love that she can Go Gok Mi’s character come to life. And Go Kyung Pyo… from the time I saw him on SNL where he played Siwon doppelgänger I like him. And now after Flower Boy Next Door, I totally think he sound the same as Siwon!!! Someone to look forward too.. and his acting is not that bad either.

That all said, I am going to be sad when this drama ends tomorrow. I hope I can find another as fun and deep as this drama.

Thank you Dok Mi, Ke Geum, Dong Hoon and Jin Rak for adding color to Monday and Tuesday drama. TVN keep this good dramas coming!!

Because of Different Times (시간이 달라서) – Standing Egg (Lyrics and Translation)

I am currently in love with this song!

Well actually I have long been a fan of Standing Egg. Next to Clazziquai Project and Winterplay, they are my 3rd favorite Korean Indie artist. I absolutely love their music. I’m and Egg-fan!

Their new song is called Because of Different Times (시간이 달라서). There isn’t a video yet of the song on their website, so I’m just posting the audio.

The Song

The first thing I noticed when I got the Melon 100 Chart last week was that there was a Standing Egg song! I think they are becoming popular not which is good. So when I listened to this song, I immediately fell in love with it. One because of the melody (I love acoustic songs, something that Korean music doesn’t have too much) and another for the lyrics. Although my Korean is limited, I am surprised at myself because I understood the song without looking at the translations. And when I saw the translation, what I understood was correct! Hurray!!! I have to study more though.

Anyway, this song is a bit of a sad song, a song that a lot of people can relate too. Like I said before, I love sad songs.. I don’t know why. On the contrast, though the lyrics is sad, the melody is not quite sad. I think this is the time when one says, “It’s time to move on now and accept that it can’t happen anymore”. I love the song for the contrast in the melody and the lyrics.

Final Verdict: Another Standing Egg song I’m loving a lot! Something different from the Kpop songs that are so popular now. It’s a breath of fresh air.

Look Aum (Hard Candy) – WhatChaRaWaLee (Lyrics)

It’s time to write  a post about a Thai song! Actually I haven’t been listening to too much Thai songs. So I did not have one to post about. But then I was reminded of this song when I saw Sungha Jung uploaded this video to his channel.

It’s a song called Look Aum (ลูกอม) by  WhatChaRaWaLee (วัชราวล). There is no music video for this song, so please play the following video for the audio.

Look Aum (pronounced like luk-om actually means literally hard candy in Thai (the kinds of candy’s have different names).

I have heard this song played and sung by all my students. I noticed that this is one of the very popular songs among high school kids here in Thailand. They memorize this song by heart. Maybe because I’ve heard it a lot of times, so that’s why I didn’t really care to find the original song. And then I heard Sungha Jung played and I am mesmerized by the song!

It’s actually a very beautiful song. The lyrics are really nice. I like hearing it and it’s very pleasant to listen to. And as I found out, it’s also very easy to sing! Hahaha. It’s officially added to the list of my fave Thai tracks. I do love Thai songs like this!

Blast from the Past: 2008 MKMF DBSK Performance

Ok.. so I know this is a bit old, but I wanted to share some old stuff on my blog. Some may react like 4 years ago was not old, but in the land of Kpop and with the emerging Kpop fans and debuting groups, 2008 was a long time ago.

And today, I can’t stop watching this video from MKMF (MAMA now) in 2008. It’s the performance of DBSK when they were still 5.

I can’t help it but I find myself watching this video during the past days. I don’t know why. Maybe because it was because I remember how crazy I was with DBSK back in 2008.

I started being a Kpop addict in 2008 all because of DBSK. And it was that time when videos were difficult to find and Kpop fans around the world were only a few. I remember how difficult it was to find subbed videos and how bad the quality of the videos were back then. DBSK introduced me to the world that is known as Kpop.

Back then, there was no Beast, Infinite or Teen Top. They were still training to be the pop idols that they are now. It was just DBSK, Super Junior, Big Bang and SS501. They were the big names for the boy bands. While it was Wonder Girls, SNSD and Kara who rules as girl groups.

It was difficult to be a Kpop fan before but I really enjoyed it. And I have DBSK to thank for that craziness that still continues until this day.

I could only wish though for them to become 5 again. 10 year reunion maybe??? Oh well, I’ll keep my fingers crossed!

Love Recipe – Clazziquai Project (MV and Lyrics)

I’ve been swamped with work lately! I’ve been stressed to the nth level.. but thank god for the new Clazziquai Project album! I have been listening to it on repeat for a few weeks now and it always takes away some of the stress. 🙂

So I wanted to share the title track of their album Blessed. It’s called Love Recipe (not to be confused with Gummy’s Love Recipe).

The Video

I have always been a fan of videos like this. I loved it since I saw it the first time. I like that they made the video in a restaurant and in a sweet shop/deli. I love the different frames and the camera angles. It was shot perfectly. I also love that they didn’t focus only on food but they also showed people in love, not just the romantic kind but all kinds of love. It’s very artistic and deep. This is my kind of video and I’m glad Clazziquai made something different from all the other Kpop vids we are used to seeing.

Two buts though… (1) all these food is making me hungry! (hahaha), (2) where is dj Clazzi! (actually from Eat Your Kimchi’s interview with them, he was in Canada). 😛

The Song

I have been waiting a long time for their comeback! I have always been a Clazziquai fan since I heard “She Is” and “Be My Love” from the OST of My Lovely Samsoon. And I have not stopped liking them because their music is very different from traditional Kpop.

If you have listened to their previous albums, you would realize that this song is reminiscent of their first album. Though they are known for releasing electronica songs, Clazziquai has done a few songs of the same genre as Love Recipe. I kind of like them singing this jazzy/bossanova sound. As always, Clazziquai is not afraid to experiment with their music and they always release tracks that are fresh and original. Alex and Horan’s voice as usual go perfect together. Actually to me their blending is probably one of the best in the industry. It’s PERFECT!!!!

This group has long been a favorite of mine and I could say a lot of praises about them, but I have to write this blog so I’ll sop here.

Final Verdict: They amazed me with another song again! I love this song and I can listen to it the whole day!!! I love them!!

Minhyuk (CNBLUE) Cam!!!!

Pardon me for this post will be written like a fan girl!

While I was browsing videos earlier, I happened to see this video and I can’t help but squeal with glee! It’s not everyday you get to see this! hahaha

It’s Minhyuk‘s Cam from when CNBLUE was playing I’m Sorry.

Yes I am a Minhyuk fan girl! Hahaha I really really like this kid! (swoon!!!) We don’t really get to see him up front because he plays the drums so most of the time he stays at the back and the other three boys are in front. But I’m really happy they posted a video like this. It’s kind of like a fan service for those shipping him especially because we don’t see a lot of him. And because of this I am one happy fan! 🙂

I don’t what is it with me and drummers but I always have preferred always drummers over the lead vocals or the guitarists. I think maybe because to me they are a bit mysterious so I like them. And I’ve always like the drums/percussions over guitars — so no wonder I was drawn to him. From this cam we see that he does play the drums well (I daresay! I think BOICEs will agree too!). My heart is fluttering seeing him twirl those drumstick. (sorry if I made you throw up.. I did say I was going to write this like a fan girl!) I’m really a very very satisfied fan! Oh you boys know how to make your fans happy! hurray for good marketing! 😛

I hope they’d be more videos like this so we can drool over him! Don’t you agree girls!

F4 (Jerry, Vic, Ken and Vanness) reunites for Chinese New Year

Xin Nian Kuai Le! Well actually that greeting came a bit late! Haha.. but I still wanted to say it! Happy Seollal!

I have been so excited for the past few weeks when I read that the original F4 (Jerry Yan, Vic Zhou, Ken Chu and Vanness Wu)  were reuniting for a show for Chinese New Year.

I knew that the show was pre-recorded and I have seen some fancams already but I actually waited for the video of the broadcast to be available before making this post. And today, I finally found a video!

Meteor Rain 流星雨

First Time 第一时间

I am not sure if a lot of the new Asian fans would recognize them, but to me they were the reason why I succumbed to the Asian invasion. Before them, I only knew of boy bands who were from Europe or North America. Didn’t really cared that much about Asian boys. Until there was F4!!!

I could still remember how crazy I was over them. Not only me, this craziness swept the Philippines and it opened doors to having more Taiwanese, Japanese and Korean dramas being show in the country. But they were always the first. They were the original Flower Boys! Before everyone knew Go Jun Pyo, everyone was talking about Dao Ming Si! Before Boys Over Flowers (Korean) and Hana Yori Dango (Japanese) there was Meteor Garden.

Now, as I see them together again, I can’t help grinning from ear to ear! OMG!!  I know they have become mature now (I don’t want to use old!!), but it doesn’t stop me from liking them still. I have honestly waited for this reunion to happen. I have read that they have wanted to have one for the last 3 years but because of their schedules, they couldn’t do it. But this year they did and thank heavens they did! And goodness me, they are still so handsome! Zai zai ai ni! (pardon this crazy fan!).

This really really made my day! Wish they would do something like this again!
